What turns gay men and straight girls on?
The scientists at Northwestern University wanted to find out.
So they did a study where they subjected men and women to different kinds of porn and erotic imagery. Great work if you can get it. The men and women had all declared them selves bi, straight, gay or something in between.
What these hardworking scientists found was that gay men got turned on by images of men, straight men got turned on by images of women and bisexual men .. well we will get back to that one.
Basically if you considered yourself as a gay or straight man your porn of preference would match that label.

And they say that men are promiscuous!
What they found was that women were not so much stuck on labels.
Self proclaimed hetero girls got turned on by male/female sex but also women got their juices flowing from watching gay images, be it gay male/male or girl/girl. So from this they have concluded that girls tend to show more bisexual arousal patterns than men. Hmmm!
What about bisexual men?
You would think that guys who consider themselves bisexual would get turned on by what ever they would throw at them.
Well not so much.
What they found was that bisexual men tended to hard - or at least make the needle move on whatever measuring contraption they had connected to these ginnie pigs – when watching one gender more than when watching an other.
So are "bisexual" men more gay than bi?
What I would like to know is the following.
Over what period of time did they do these experiments. Did they just measure them once or did they ask them to come back after a few days?
The reason I ask is that I know from personal experience that as a bisexual my fantasy preferences and thus what turns me on can and will change from day to day and sometimes even from minute to minute.

Studies of gay and bisexual men in the 1990's showed that the two groups reported similar numbers of male sexual partners and risky sexual encounters. And a 1994 survey by The Advocate, the gay-oriented newsmagazine, found that, before identifying themselves as gay, 40 percent of gay men had described themselves as bisexual.
"I'm not denying that bisexual behavior exists," said Dr. Bailey, "but I am saying that in men there's no hint that true bisexual arousal exists, and that for men arousal is orientation."
But other researchers - and some self-identified bisexuals - say that the technique used in the study to measure genital arousal is too crude to capture the richness - erotic sensations, affection, admiration - that constitutes sexual attraction.

I remember reading about this research -- probably this same article -- when it came out. Wasn't really sure what to make of it. One reaction I had then was I think the same as yours: that is, we are in different moods for different things at different times. I know based on my own experience that sometimes I am more into guys, and at other times thinking more about women, and that I rarely combine the two. The other thing is I don't know what they were showing people pictures of.
